They are just pets, they have no other purpose as far as I know.
Reply:Well, the person who used to own our country house had one, and he left pictures lying around with him roaming the grounds. He looked awfully pretty =] so maybe ppl keep them to make their grounds look more elegant.. or something? as far as i know this peacock was quite friendly so maybe they do make good pets, but only in the country where land is available i'd say.
Reply:I have seen them as free roaming pets also. I have heard that they will eat ticks and help keep the yard free of insect pests.
Reply:midnite angel answered it perfectly.
Reply:Are you serious? I thought peacocks had to be kept in the zoo. That is weird. Maybe they have a special license for keeping wild game. I never heard of this before.
Reply:Yes, they are pets. Although, they still stay kinda wild. Some parts of the country , you have to have a permit to keep them. It is not hard to get a permit.

I was going to get a male and female at one time, but the neighbors dogs killed all of my chickens, so I never bought any peacocks or peahens!

I checked into that about three years ago, so the prices may be different now, but close to the same.

They lay eggs and the chicks sell for $75.00 to $100.00

A full size peacock sells for about $175.00 female and about $300.00 for the male. It takes about 2 to 3 years for the male to get his beautiful feathers!

Also the males long peacock feathers sells for about $5.00

They shed a few of their feathers every few days! I had a friend that had some of them and she told me I could walk around her yard and look for the feathers! I found three and she gave me some more to go with them for an arrangement.

They are safe in a large cage, as long as they have food and water, but they like to walk around and can fly up in the trees and are hard to get down! But they stay close to where you turn them loose. They still stay kinda wild when loose. Not like a chicken that comes up to you.
Reply:People keep them for there beauty and for the feathers. A single male peacock feather can be up to $5. Easy money to look at a beautiful bird. Also people eat them lol
Reply:peacock + peahen = petit poi. yum.
Reply:why not? they are beautiful birds (well the peacocks are.. peahens are a rather plain looking) i dont know about the cage part though.. the ones i've seen domesticated roam free. they are a spectacular sight as they walk on any lawn.
